Old-times discovery of Iida river!

Studies on the relationship between people in Suwa and the river

We studied about race at the social studies class and learned that people used to use the water of the Iida River for various things. We also found that older generation, like our grandparents and parents, played in the river more often than now we do.

The voice of the children
  • People in the past played a lot in the river, but now what we can do is only fishing or making a base. Maybe it is because people now think playing in the river is dangerous and some are prohibited.
  • We'd like to swim in the river like they did in the past.
  • It must have been inconvenient without waterworks. This is why they needed to use water of the Iida River.
  • We also float ornaments for the Star Festival in the river still now.
  • I heard that the Iida River dried up because of the persistence of dry weather in summer and people could not use water for farming. They had many difficulties in the past.

A simple question: Why the water of the Iida River is so muddy?

It could be because the water is polluted, or are there any other reasons?
The children have been wondering about this since beginning. So we asked the civil engineers about this.
They said it is;

The research on the upper Iida River in Makimura

In September we went to Makimura to serve also as Independence PTA the upper Iida River there. The river there was very different from the river near the school. We could not get into the river in Suwa, but in Makimura we could go into the river.
It was especially great that we could visit the water purification plant there. They said the water of the Iida River is used as drinking water after purified.
