The facts about the Kawamuro Hospital

In Heisei 10, on the 120th birthday of the Kawamuro Hospital, we started researching about the hospital. One day when we were studying at a shrine in Kitashinboku, we found something very interesting. That is a stone monument of Mr. Douichi Kawamuro. Since then, we became interested in the hospital and began researching about it.


Mr. Doichi Kawamuro



The Kawamuro Hospital is the only hospital in Suwa area, and Mr. Kawamuro established it. Taking over the business from his grandfather, Mr. Kawamuro was selling fish at Naka-machi in Takada. But soon he went out of business. Then he moved to Shinboku and became a farmer there. But one day, he resolved that did not want to be farmer forever, but he would labor for others, and started learning medical science from Dr. Dojun Suzuki, the doctor of Takada-Han. In Meiji 6, Mr.Kawamura moved to Yokohama and studied Western medical science from an American doctor, Mr. J.C. Hebonn. After that, he researched on ophthalmology under Mr. Naohumi Sato and Tatsuya Inoue. In Meiji 11 Mr. Kawamura went back to his hometown and established Kawamura Ophthalmology Hospital. His medical skills were so miracle that his reputation spread over not only Niigata prefecture but also outside of Niigata. Mr. Kawamura kept devoting himself to help others, and passed away on October 25, Tisyo 1, at the age of 71.


About Mr. Kanji Kawamuro

Mr. Kanji Kawamuro was an ophthalmologist. He graduated from Tokyo Teikoku University and then became the director of the Mikuni Hospital. When he was young, he went to Mansyu seven times as an army surgeon. A q hospital (The hospital only for army soldiers) launches the hospital in Takada simultaneously with army division entry into a castle outside the Takada hospital with old history, and the Chimeido hospital, in Taisyo 9, Takada brain surgery was established. It was now called Nishishiro Hospital and ward was built in the Nakatono-machi (Nishishiro 2-7), and the inauguration ceremony and the opening ceremony of the ward were held on November 28, Taisho 9.
Kanji kawamuro of Suwa doctor planned with Hikozo Kojima, Rainosuke Toda, Susumu Goda and Kijuro Fukuda established with the capital of 50,000 yen, and called the Takada hospital at first.
Although this kind of hospital (mental hospital) was located in Niigata, since there was nothing in the prefecture not much, it has had very many patients in the whole country those days since commencement of business. It was specified as the national substitution hospital and the capital was increased to 75,000 yen in this December, 12 on the following day, November 17, Taisho 10.

Electricity and Mr. Kanji

(Kanji was planning to build an electricity systems in Suwa.) At the beginning some people agreed with him, but there were also some who disagreed. Those who agreed with Kanji said that electricity would improve their industry, and other who disagreed said that it could cause fire and also might let people live it up. But finally in Taisyo 8, Kanji made the city served with electricity.

About Dr. Michitaka Kawamuro

Dr. Michitaka Kawamuro was a psychiatrist. He took a degree in Showa 15, and took part in Chinese War as a soldier. He came back to Japan safely and expanded a private S to accommodate more patients and renamed it as Kawamuro hospital. He also gave curtain to Suwa.

Inaho-en is a nursing home for elderly people, who are over 65 years old and cannot stay home because of serious handicaps requiring special care.

About Dr. Yu Kawamuro

Dr. Yu Kawamura graduated from Jikei University School of Medicine in Syowa 45, and then became a psychiatrist. He became the director of the Kawamuro Hospital in showa 63, and then in Heisei 7, became the governors of the hospital. At the same time, he also served as a director of the Nishishiro Hospital, and the next year became the governor. Now he serves as the governor of four hospitals; Takada Nishishiro Hospital, Kawamuro Hospital, Joetsu Tsukushi no Sato Iryou Fukushi Kai, Joetsu Roujin Fukushi Kyokai. He sometimes delivers a lecture and also go to Tokyo to study.

Joestu Tsukushi no Sato (Tsukushi Kobo)

Joetsu Tsukushi no Sato is a nursing home for mental patients. It gives the patients the opportunity to learn vocational and industrial skills so that they can live their own lives. At Tsukushi Koubou, the patients are making bread. Some of them are the patients at Kawamuro Hospital, who are rehabilitating themselves.
